Anne Bonny taking aim with her flintlock pistol.

Aided by a heavy rain, Captain Rackham led the 12 crew members to the high wooden side of the targeted vessel. Beside her pirate comrades on this vital mission, Anne was in the rowboat while the warm rain pelted down. Then, without having been detected, Rackham, Anne, and the other pirates climbed aboard the ship as quietly as possible. Benefitting from the element of surprise, they took possession of the William without difficulty. Only one or two sleepy guards were on board, but they did not want to die to save the property of Captain Ham, who was still on shore in Nassau like the rest of his crew.

Rackham gave orders to Anne and the others to raise the anchor and to set the sails. Energized to move swiftly after such a grand theft, the pirate crew flew into action, with everyone knowing their duties as prearranged by Rackham, as to escape from Nassau Harbor as soon as possible. Before long, the sleek William, with canvas sails flapping and full in the late-night summer breeze, moved with good speed through the harbor’s waters and farther away from the twinkling lights of Nassau.

But to make a successful escape, Rackham and his crew had to first slip past the triangular Fort Nassau, which contained 28 cannons was protected by a guard ship, before they could slip out of the harbor. Fortunately, the combined effect of the rainstorm, darkness, and a light fog that reduced the visibility of the king’s soldiers now worked in Rackham’s favor.

The tension finally broke among Rackham’s anxious crewmen, and no doubt to Anne’s great relief, when the fort’s rows of cannons remained silent. After passing the guns, the intense August heat and humidity no longer felt so oppressive to Anne and her comrades. With the William moving fast to confirm its reputation for seaworthiness, Rackham sailed out of the western entrance of Nassau Harbor at full speed. The pirates were now in the clear, and Anne and her comrades shouted themselves hoarse in wild celebration. Perhaps this bold capture of the William, followed by their stealthy escape in the night, were harbingers of good things to come. The newly acquired pirate ship glided through the darkness with seemingly effortless ease, with the storm’s winds powering the full sails that pushed the crew out to sea and farther away from danger.

But nobody knew what the future had in store for the audacious Rackham crew that had once again defied the odds. After stealing a well-known vessel, this cruise was far riskier than in the past, as the news of the ship’s capture was sure to be spread far and wide. One reason why this crew was so small, at 12 members, was because Rackham and many of these individuals were now breaking the amnesty after having taken the king’s pardon. If caught, then they would be hanged for this crime, especially when combined with acts of piracy and stealing such a well-known ship right from under the nose of authorities.
